1. Why Spencer?
I enjoy the variety of projects and also feeling like a member of the team as oppose to just a number within a larger organisation.
2. What do you do?
I am currently one of two Assistant Quantity Surveyors within Team 3 mostly involved with Network Rail Contracts, renewing points heating and also the renewal of PSP units and sidings lighting.
This role involves a variety of tasks and skills in controlling and monitoring cost and value with cash flow internally, providing an accurate valuation of the works complete in requesting payment from the client, providing identification and valuation of works additional to contract scopes and also the commercial management of subcontractors. Communicating commercial aspects of contracts to the teams on site during project implementation is also a key aspect to this role.
Whilst the role includes a lot of involvement during the implementation stage of contracts, Assistant Quantity Surveyors are utilised in the submission of tenders for future contracts ensuring that an accurately priced submission in accordance with the contract and scope of works is provided to the client as part of the submission.
3. Your Career to date
I was first employed by Spencer in August 2004 as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor following completion of an AVCE in Construction and The Built Environment at Hull College. Spencer continued to support me in completion of a HNC in Construction at Hull College and further to completion of this alongside working on a large project at Paragon Transport Interchange in Hull I was promoted to Assistant Quantity Surveyor. Spencer have continued to support me along my career path with sponsorship in achieving a BSc, Hons. degree in Quantity Surveying at Sheffield Hallam University, which I aim to complete in 2009.
4. How far can you go?
Following graduation in 2009 I aim to progress further in becoming a chartered Quantity Surveyor, with further potential of becoming a Senior Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Manager as my career matures.
