1. Why Spencer?
Spencer have a strong focus on career development for their staff. This is achieved through regular “on the job training” and active encouragement of progression. The working environment allows for new work experiences through both small and large projects and gives ample opportunity to see them take shape on site through to completion.
The aspects I enjoy include meeting clients and other project based staff and enjoying good office working relationships with opportunity for out of work social activities - all supported by a strong total remuneration package within a culture of safe working practices.
I also take personal satisfaction from the belief that my contributions are appreciated.
2. What do you do?
My current role includes producing work packages. This includes civil and structural general arrangement and detail design drawings - that ensure specification compliance and the production of Risk Assessments and Hazard Identification Logs.
Another element of my role allows me to visit site to undertake surveys using manual and electronic surveying methods with subsequent reporting of data back to the Senior Project Engineers.
3. Your Career to date
My core experience lies within civil engineering design and steel fabrication. I have completed a full time foundation course in Mechanical Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University and an HNC in Building Studies.
Backed by strong support from Spencer, I am currently undertaking a Degree in Construction Management with expected graduation in 2009.
During my time with Spencer, I have been involved with a prestigious job for First-Siemens developing a new train-care facility in York. The work included the detailing of complex reinforced concrete slabs, various drainage schemes and associated groundworks. More recently I have worked on a job for BAE Systems replacing a dry dock gate in Scotston, Glasgow requiring sheet piling cofferdam’s to enable isolation of the works from the Clyde canal. I have also had involvement in various other projects including Hull Paragon Station, Sheffield Station and Port Dundas Canal Regeneration.
Previously I have worked as a Junior Civil Designer undertaking projects within the petro-chemical industry located on the Humber bank. In order to base my career plans on a practical foundation, I chose to complete an Indentured Apprenticeship in steel fabrication with a local engineering company. Amongst other things this helped me in communicating effectively at all levels.
4. How far can you go?
My immediate plan is to successfully complete my academic education at Sheffield Hallam whilst gaining experience through my current position at Spencer. I believe this will open opportunities leading to the role of Project Manager.
My current goal is therefore to achieve the position of Project Manager that will benefit me and provide Spencer with a return on their investment.
