Construction Supervisor

1. Why Spencer?

I joined Spencer 16 years ago as a Labourer and since then I have been promoted through the Company to my current position as a Construction Supervisor. During that time I have been involved in some interesting projects - mainly associated with the railway infrastructure. I have built-up extensive knowledge of the particular requirements of carrying out work on the operational railway and have worked at various locations around the UK including London, York, Birmingham and Durham. I enjoy working for Spencer – I have many friends in the Company – and feel that I have been helped to progress my career.

2. What do you do?

As a Construction Supervisor I am responsible for making sure that all the works are carried out in compliance with the specification, safety and Network Rail’s operational requirements - on time, within cost and to the required standards of quality. This involves me in close liaison with the Client’s site manager to ensure that each step is in-line with his aspirations for the project. I regularly carry out a “two week look-head” to make sure we are complying with the programme and to make sure our work activities – and those of our subcontractors – remain on schedule. I conduct Tool Box Talks with the workforce on a weekly basis, carryout inductions for new work operatives and complete all the administrative duties – including completing timesheets – for the workforce on my sites.

3. Your Career to date

Over the last 16 years I have made good progress through the ranks and the Company has assisted me to achieve this by recognising and rewarding my commitment.

4. How far can you go?

I suppose there is no limit to where I can go – but I really do enjoy my present role – out on site in the thick of the action and working closely with the “lads”. Although I would not mind a move into management I do not particularly want to find myself working in an office every day. So my ambition is to move up through site management – promotion that will allow me stay where I want to be – on site.
